The first reading was “8 Key
Takeaways about Social Media and News.” It was about how social media affects
the news. Whether it is broad or not people still get their news through social
media. The second reading was “The Transition to Digital
Journalism.” It was about how digital media is taking the rise of where people
get their news with TV being the leader and print or a newspaper organization
falling last.
One thing that I took from the first reading was the first point that news has a place in social media with some news coming from more sites than others with the top social media sites being Twitter and Facebook. I agree with this aspect comparing these social media sites to Instagram and Snapchat being that those sites are not particularly used for news compared to Facebook and Twitter. With the second reading I took that over the recent years that social media has began to rise up above newspapers. I agree that with more technology these days social media makes newspapers obsolete meaning that more people use technology and social media to get their news. However, TV is the absolute best place to get the news but sooner or later it too will become obsolete with that social media can now stream videos. That means competing with the prime time or television news.
With the first reading the second thing I took away from the reading was that the news on social media is too broad. The primary news people tend to receive on social media comes in the forms of entertainment, lifestyles and sports. That exempts politics, business, international news and science/technology, which is sad in the world that we live in today. I totally agree with this concept of how many take entertainment, lifestyles, and sports more seriously than what can actually change their day-to-day activities. With the second reading and second point that I agree with is the social media is a prime source for journalist to network and get more credits out in the world whether it is blogs, chat rooms and even podcasts via YouTube. I totally agree with this concept of social media being the good ground for journalist to network.
The conclusion I received from the readings was that social media is a good source to get information in and out of. With the first reading telling me how social media can affect the news. Whether it is broad or not people still get their news through social media. With the second one it told me how digital media on the rise of where people get their news.
